The CIVETTA blouse was released a few days ago and, for top finishes, it includes the technique of French seams. This is why, we will have a closer look at this method more in details in this post.

French seam finishes the edges nicely and replaces the overlock. It is often used with fine fabrics, however it can be applied with thicker fabrics. It is also ideal when sewing a transparent fabric because you can see a nice finish through it.

The first step is to define the width of the finished seam. For a fine fabric and a curved seam, choose a narrow width of 0.3 to 0.5cm. For a thicker fabric and a straight seam, you can choose a seam from 0.5 to 0.7cm. However, you have to keep in mind that if the seam is too curved, the seam allowance may make waves if it is wide.

For a finished French seam of 0.7cm, cut the seam allowance to 1.4cm being careful to cut straight without letting small threads overtake.

Lay the pieces wrong sides together, then sew 0.6cm from the edge.

Press seam open, then fold up the seam right sides together.

Fold the pieces right sides together, then sew 0.7cm from the previous seam.

Press the seam flat.
