I had the pleasure of meeting up with Chloé, a former classmate from fashion school, for a cultural outing: the exhibition "Les Monstrueuses – Carte blanche à Kévin Germanier" at the Mudac in Lausanne.Switzerland isn't always associated with haute couture, and yet! It was a real joy to share such an exhibition with someone who shares the same passion.

An explosion of colours and unexpected materials

From the moment they enter, visitors are immersed in a world of vibrant colours, Kévin Germanier's signature style. His creations are veritable stage outfits made with recycled materials: glitter, plastic beads from children's toys, recycled PET bottles, and repurposed sequins.

Visiting exhibitions by renowned designers is a true source of inspiration. Over the past 15 years, I've had the opportunity to admire the work of Jean-Paul Gaultier, Jean-Paul Goude, and Yohji Yamamoto. However, I regret never having seen exhibitions of such magnitude dedicated to female designers, a particularly striking observation on this International Women's rights Day.

Germanier's style is the opposite of traditional tailoring, precise and technical. Here, technique fades into the background, giving way to pure creativity. He breaks free from conventions to use alternative materials and create pieces that aren't meant for everyday wear. But that's precisely the point, because couture knows no bounds.

From stage inspiration to reality

At Opian, the philosophy is different. I create patterns and kits that integrate into everyday life. Whether classic or original, the designs must be easy to wear, easy to wash, and wear again daily, not just for a special occasion. Where Kévin Germanier pushes the boundaries of wearable art, here it's wearability itself.

However, this exhibition offers interesting ideas to enrich your future home sewing projects:

• The boldness of colour combinations: Dare to mix shades you would never have imagined together in your Opian garments.
• Upcycling: Germanier is a master of recycling. Why not incorporate your leftover fabric or notions into your next creations?
